Dear god, this is some clueless shit right here. Office politics are everything when it comes to success in the corporate, military and even academic world. Anyone that tells you otherwise is hopelessly naive or flat out lying to you. That doesnโ€™t mean you should involve yourself in office gossip mind you โ€” because gossip and politics are two different things. One is essential, the other is playing with fire.

Getting involved in office politics is essential because in the real world people donโ€™t get promotions and opportunities for having the most skill or the best work ethic. They getโ€ฆ

Letโ€™s be as real as possible โ€” the business world is a crapshoot when it comes to advancing your career. You need just as much luck as you do work ethic and skill, because even though you might be the best at what you do, unless things go almost perfectly for you in the world of office politics, you might find yourself stuck in a position for many years longer than youโ€™re happy with.

You may even be stuck there for good.

Hereโ€™s how to emulate it on a normal personโ€™s budget

Ever since LeBron James and his personal trainer appeared on an episode of the Tim Ferriss Show podcast, a bunch of media outlets have jumped upon the fact that he spends over $1.5m per year on ensuring his body is in tip top condition. It makes complete sense โ€” professional athletes have a short career span where they make their most money. $1.5m is nothing to James, and itโ€™s an investment that ensures he can earn many times that for every year he adds to his career.

Two separate forces have hijacked the term for their own gain

Iโ€™ve never really liked the term #selfcare. Maybe itโ€™s all the Instagram photos or advertising Iโ€™ve seen behind it, that reduces an important topic that deserves a lot of time and attention down to glasses of wine in a bubble bath. That was actually a couple of years ago, before it became this gigantic thing thanks to Covid.

Since then, the thing thatโ€™s irked me and that most people donโ€™t seem to have noticed when it comes to all the #selfcare hastaggery going on is that it rarely seems to involve actual self care. โ€ฆ

An average guyโ€™s review, without the BS

I was never a comic book person, but I was a kid when Michael Keatonโ€™s Batman came out at the movies and I avidly watched everything that DC comics put on the screen since then. From the original Batman: The Animated Series all the way through to the recently released Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, thereโ€™s been very little Iโ€™ve missed.

I never watched anything Marvel until Iron Man hit cinemas and while Iโ€™ve thoroughly enjoyed the ride, it hasnโ€™t always been to my taste. I often find it far too jokey with unnecessary banter (Black Widow and her quipsโ€ฆ

It wonโ€™t get you banned, youโ€™ll just look like a total douche

If thereโ€™s one platform that epitomises the term โ€œself-aggrandisement,โ€ itโ€™s LinkedIn. It started out as a way for people to have an easier time finding work by putting their profile out there and connecting with opportunities, but predictably, itโ€™s ended up like Instagram โ€” chock full of douchey influencers, err, I mean โ€œthought leaders.โ€

Seriously, the platform has become so insufferable I donโ€™t even look at it anymore. โ€ฆ

Itโ€™s an outdated method that does more harm than good

Putting ice on an injury has been an almost universally accepted treatment paradigm for decades and is actually still being recommended and taught in schools to kids and in first aid courses. Do a search on Google right now and youโ€™ll find that almost everyone seems to recommend the RICER paradigm:

  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation
  • Recovery

Being someone who has competed in various sports for the last 30 years, however, and at a level high enough that Iโ€™m always trying to get back out there as soon as possible, Iโ€™ve kept a close eye on the best methods in additionโ€ฆ
