My initial thoughts on Medium have been proven wrong…
And I couldn’t be happier. Most of you will have come across me from a post I wrote fairly recently decrying the fact that Medium is full of bullshit listicles and self help garbage. Judging by the swift response of recommends and the comments that followed, I touched on a nerve. Since I wrote that, things seem to have changed rather rapidly. The community engagement manager elizabeth tobey showed up and started directing people as to how to curate their feeds. I noticed people began to start their own publications as a backlash to what was showing up on their feeds, giving lesser known writers a chance to get seen. My own feed is now blissfully clear of life hacking listicles and full of amazing stories that have made me laugh, think and even cry.
And the thing that pleases me most? I’m seeing some of my favourite writers on Medium show up in major publications online. David Hopkins. amazing piece on the sitcom Friends is on the front page of Observer.com today. I’m also seeing that Ellie Guzman is appearing on Huffpost. And yours truly? I’ve snagged myself a spot at Observer.com as well after some of my recent success here.
So chin up users of Medium, because not only are things changing for the better rather quickly around here, but the writers are being noticed by more than just our little community. Is everything here perfect? Of course not. I’m still waiting for all of my comments on other’s posts to be taken off of my profile so my actual writing is what people see, but hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day. I’m sure the Medium staff are well aware of such problems by now.
So please, keep on writing what you’re writing you fabulous people, I truly can’t believe what a great place I’ve stumbled upon here, hopefully it stays this way for a long time.
