Did Mark Zuckerberg Just Turn Into a Bond Villain?

The Metaverse bears a striking resemblance to Tomorrow Never Dies

Wow, in 2021, truth really is stranger than fiction. Or no, maybe truth mirrors fiction in this sense. Mark Zuckerberg, everybody’s favourite android turned human, has just announced the creation of the Metaverse. I must admit, I had to stifle a giggle (well, I didn’t actually stifle it) at how ridiculous it all sounded.

Why is it ridiculous?

Well, for most of us, we actually like living in the outside world. I sure as shit have no intention of ever inhabiting Zuck’s little dystopian nightmare program. If I want to spend time in a virtual world, I’ll play World of Warcraft, where I can perform magic and be someone totally different to myself. I have no intention of spending time as a Sim.

Zuck is like Elliot Carver

If you’re a Bond fan, you’ll doubtless be familiar with the film Tomorrow Never Dies. The plot is that a megalomaniac media baron begins creating the news by pitting the British and Chinese armed forces against each other with a transponder device that puts their military units off course without them realising it. Because he’s doing it, he has people there with cameras at the scene and gets the scoop.
